  • EU Leaders Gird for Budget Brawl

EU leaders brandished demands and threats as they arrived at their summit to get a deal on the bloc's budget, with the U.K. leading a pack of malcontents who talked down hopes of agreement.

    ......

Positions are still "very far apart" and a deal remains in doubt, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said after the first day of summit talks.
"We've got an overall picture, but some positions are still very far apart," she told reporters after leaving the meeting in the early hours of Friday.
She said she doubted that leaders would achieve a definitive outcome when they meet again Friday.
The German chancellor, who has pushed an austerity budget settlement, said there was a "good, constructive spirit" in the meeting.
"We are a step closer to a lasting solution," she said.
