有譯無譯，記之繼之

想找點文字來鼓勵自己時， 看到這樣一句： " Adversity is the diamond dust Heaven polishes its jewels with." 出自 Thomas Carlyle  馬上聯想到中文的「 玉不琢不成器 」。 但是，在茫茫網海中搜尋，卻令我茫然了.... 以訛傳訛的結果是，很多教學資源用了這樣一句翻譯： An uncut gem goes not sparkle. 且不論翻得對不對、好不好、傳不傳神、漂不漂亮， 但網路上出現的這一句，應該是某人某次貼錯字或打錯字，之後就這麼繼續誤人子弟。 其中的goes，應改為does ，因為sparkle並無形容詞用法（go後面可加形容詞表示「變成...」，例如：The coffee went cold, so I didn't drink it. ） 正確（文法角度）應為：    An uncut gem d oes not sparkle.        

說真的， 我們以前學的其實是美語。 撇開發音不談， 我常覺得英國人用字遣詞的習慣自成一格，寫文章特愛掉書袋。 英式幽默也是，常常拐來彎去，含蓄中自有巧妙。 所以，閱讀 經濟學人(The Economist) 時，愛死了他們的文字與文字遊戲，但也死了很多腦細胞。 光是 專欄的名稱 就讓我丈二金剛摸不著頭腦了。 所幸， 該刊編輯 總算有點同理心，為了可能跟我一樣困惑的讀者 寫了一篇解釋 ， 讓我看到了隧道盡頭的光..... 該篇有人譯為中文，網址已附在本文最底。 這些專欄名稱，好幾個是出自 人名 ： Bagehot, Charlemagne, Schumpeter, Babbage 也有 地名 ： Lexington, 有趣的是，竟會出現跟 植物 有關的名稱，而且不只一個： Banyan, Buttonwood, Pomegranate, Baobab ， 而且，注意到了吧？好幾個都是 b 開頭，莫怪乎編輯自己也說下次要是有新專欄要命名，可別 再 用 b 開頭的字了。                                                                                                  這邊特別提一下，他們自己說了， Bagehot 要唸作 Bajut   (這位仁兄寫過《英國憲法》， 牛津字典也收錄他的名字 哩） 所以，將之譯為「白芝浩」似乎是誤譯（但似已慣用？）， 比較像是「貝芝特」（但我為何聯想到康貝特與北之特？哈哈） 經濟學人大解惑: 經濟學人專欄跟部落格的這些特殊名字是哪來的 The Economist Sep 5th 2013 原文
