有譯無譯，記之繼之

還記得《星際爭霸戰》（Star Trek）的經典開場旁白嗎？ "Space... the Final Frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Her ongoing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life forms and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before. " 有名到很多人都能整段背出來， 有名到居然有人出了這款披薩切割器－－星艦造型確實會讓人做此聯想，但連廣告詞也要像才道地－－ BOLDLY CUT PIZZA WHERE NO MAN HAS CUT BEFORE!   （請對照上文最後一句） 好了，我要進入正題了：「企業號」（Enterprise）這個名稱翻的很糟！

輾轉搜尋著譯詩， 發現，William Blake常被引用的一首詩， 雖然我們幾乎慣性採用「一沙一世界...」的中譯版本， 但嘗試另譯的人也不少。 To see a World in a Grain of Sand, And Heaven in a Wild Flower, Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand, And Eternity in an hour. -- Auguries of Innocence by William Blake 也許你不知道，其實，這四句只是原詩的開頭，這首詩...很長！( 點此閱讀原文 )

做翻譯真不容易。 有時，雖然被稱讚，但被稱讚的點卻教人莫名其妙。 舉例來說，據近日新聞報導，將「任性」翻譯為capricious，竟被媒體形容為「神準」！ 媒體也是任性吧.....（意思是，媒體都很支持 --- 不懂？請讀下去）

不談政治，只想紀錄這次看到的英文，尤其是容易搞錯（也確實很多人搞錯）的詞彙： Minister of State 不是部長 如何變成女爵（baroness）

這篇不是要談閩南語中的「好酒沉甕底」如何英譯 （當然，既然「好戲」總是壓軸，我還是會收集一些寫法，列於本篇文末） 。 寫這篇的緣由是筆記在書上跟網上看到的錯誤： 首先，是某本書認為「好戲在後頭」有對應的英文諺語，亦即 The best is behind. 但是...光看 The best is behind 這句就有問題啦。

上週看電視時，抱怨了一下Law and Order的翻譯 但，如該文所說，人非聖賢，孰能無過 --- 結果在平常較少出錯的影集中也看到了 影集：罪案第六感 (Perception) 原文：I had a thing for you. 誤譯：我有東西要給妳。

This is not a "make or break" question. It's a "make or take" question, rather literally. ( ↑ 我竟然用英文講了個超冷的笑話 ） 總之，翻譯法律文件時，看到 take a decision一詞， 被訓練成對這類細節必須「龜毛」的我， 當下感到不妙：take a decision的意思，跟make a decision是不是不一樣呢？ （我的想法是，既然一樣，幹嘛不用make就好了，非要用個少見的take？）

正如中文說「掌上明珠」，英文卻說是「眼中的蘋果」(apple in the eye)， 許多片語、俚語雖可直接對譯，但中文跟英文使用的比喻，卻不相同， 因此，容易產生誤會。 例如： climbing the walls 乍看之下，會想：這不就是中文的「狗急跳牆」嗎？

首先，證所稅 不等於 證交稅 --- 後者是針對交易課稅，比較不痛不癢， 前者是針對證券交易的所得課稅，也就是資本利得稅 「 證交稅 是針對行為課稅，目的是為了增加稅收; 證所稅 是針對結果課稅，目的是為了公平租稅。」 在此不論優劣取捨，只看英文。 因此，證交稅是 securities transaction tax 證所稅則是 capital gain(s) tax 美國國稅局網站 Ten Important Facts About Capital Gains and Losses capital gains tax (複數) 一般比較常見。 capital gain tax (單數) 也有其支持者，例如IRS的表格(見下方e.g.)就是。 原則上，兩種皆可。

科技的東西不好翻，但其實，說起來以下這種句子也不算很科技吧...應該算是商業用語才對， 但...弄了好一會兒才弄懂。 先看以下句子： 由於4月下旬中國勞動節 庫存回補 需求不如預期，2Q12除少數平板計算機及智能型手機新機型上市 備貨效應 外，多數系統產品及記憶卡應用市場依然持續受到1H淡季效應影響，呈現疲弱不振的狀況。  inventory replenishment for China’s Labor Day holiday was not as expected. Furthermore, aside from restocking for certain new tablet PC and smartphone models hitting the market in 2Q12, most system product and memory card application markets remain sluggish, affected by the 1H slow season .

翻譯某人履歷時， 看到  Synergistic Activities 這個項目 想了半天，查了半天， 後來發現其實就跟我們平常在英文履歷上寫 Activities 類似， 只是用synergistic 比較屬於跟自己的學經歷相關者， 於是取其意，譯為 「 相關 經歷」（有別於「工作經歷(work experience)」或 「專業經歷(professional experience)」

公司的Chairman，不是主席，而是董事長 (Chairman of the Board) 總經理不是general manager，而是 president，或譯 總裁。 CEO 台譯 執行長，陸譯 首席執行官

OALD: bidding   n.  ( old-fashioned   or   formal ) what somebody asks or orders you to do to do somebody's bidding   (= to obey somebody) At his father's bidding  (= because his father asked him to)  he wrote to his lawyer.
