有譯無譯，記之繼之

輾轉搜尋著譯詩， 發現，William Blake常被引用的一首詩， 雖然我們幾乎慣性採用「一沙一世界...」的中譯版本， 但嘗試另譯的人也不少。 To see a World in a Grain of Sand, And Heaven in a Wild Flower, Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand, And Eternity in an hour. -- Auguries of Innocence by William Blake 也許你不知道，其實，這四句只是原詩的開頭，這首詩...很長！( 點此閱讀原文 )

The other day I came across the word  (I bet there'll be a lot of my blogposts starting with this sentence) franchise watching TV. blah blah blah....the CSI franchise....blah blah blah... I didn't what it meant but it's not hard to guess, especially after I bumped into an entertainment news on the "Holmes franchise" done by the Iron Man. 基本上一看到 franchise 這個字，我們這種ESL（把英文當外語學）的人能夠知道是 連鎖加盟  就算中上了。 < Macmillan > eg.:  Most   of   the   Burger   King   outlets   operate   as   franchises . 因為我們的英語教學（學校系統，而非補習班）教材很少用上它的另一個字義：

以前就注意過這個句型，但仍會一時忘記。 今天再次看到 有人舉了這例子 ： It's a good father that knows his son.  意思其實是 It takes a really (perfectly) good father to, perhaps, know his son.  也就是說，

美國的Wall Street，大夥兒都熟吧？ 而在美式英文的新聞文章中，常把 Wall Street 與 Main Street 對比。 今天則在The Economist（英國著名財經週刊）看到 the high street ( 文裡確實是用小寫 ) 的說法。 請出「危機超人」Wikipedia來解答，嘿，可有趣了，沒想到同樣都是「主要商業區」，也有這麼多講法。 想了想，倒也沒錯：從這個詞語發展的過程來看，

以下這兩個片語，表面上說得似乎不是好事，但其實是常見的打氣用語啊！！ Give them hell!  (them有時縮寫為'em, 因為這句很口語) Break a leg!

今天有個「笑話新聞」，就是機場的「適用多卡通」 的 英譯竟成了"more cartoons" (多+卡通) （ 別想湊熱鬧跑去看，因為新聞報導最後可看到機場人員已經在清除該標示的文字了） ； 總之，這種「字面解」而導致的誤譯，令我想到這幾天新學的一個俚語： to do something full bore  坦白說，乍看此詞，一時間我只想得到 bore 一字的兩個意思： n. 厭煩、無聊 或  v. pt. 承受；帶有； 但也不至於呆呆認為就是這意思。（譯者不見得什麼字都會，但最起碼要能分辨某字詞是否有其他涵義） 那就只好查下去囉！學習新詞總是件愉快的事。

This is not a "make or break" question. It's a "make or take" question, rather literally. ( ↑ 我竟然用英文講了個超冷的笑話 ） 總之，翻譯法律文件時，看到 take a decision一詞， 被訓練成對這類細節必須「龜毛」的我， 當下感到不妙：take a decision的意思，跟make a decision是不是不一樣呢？ （我的想法是，既然一樣，幹嘛不用make就好了，非要用個少見的take？）

一般說法： 公關高手、公關專家 但因 spin 有 bend the facts in one's favor 的含意，因此，可以帶點負面味道去譯。 政治化妝師 （Wikipedia「政治化妝師（ Spin doctor ）是指政治公關顧問，透過一系列公關手段，影響傳媒的報道，從而改變輿論」）（OS：還是偏中性...，味道不夠） VOA美國習慣用語 ，通常不提供對應翻譯，而是解釋字詞意思：「spin doctor是指擅長於公共關係的競選助手」 BBC中文網新聞 ：抬轎人 硬拗高手 （從 這個查找結果 看來的，此譯居然是 前行政院長陳沖所寫 。看來他英文不差呢！可惜沒機會幫他口譯見識見識）

正如中文說「掌上明珠」，英文卻說是「眼中的蘋果」(apple in the eye)， 許多片語、俚語雖可直接對譯，但中文跟英文使用的比喻，卻不相同， 因此，容易產生誤會。 例如： climbing the walls 乍看之下，會想：這不就是中文的「狗急跳牆」嗎？

Yes, the word bully used to denote something positive. bully 這個字可說是近代的buzzword，也就是以暴力、惡作劇等手段欺負弱者的「霸凌」行為 He's a bully. She's a victim of campus bully. 然而，我今天學到：bully 曾經有 good、superb的意思。 這讓我想到週末看了電影「金盞花大酒店」（The best exotic Marigold Hotel）中， （以下有雷，不想被劇透者請不要點入）

hyperlink讓學習也成了觸角無限延伸的思路網 原本只是要學franchise這個字的相關用法， 不意看到 franchise player這個詞 這似乎是美國才用的運動術語

這下誤會大了！幸好現在釐清了，為時未晚。 有些字，我們自信地認為自己懂，但其實是錯誤的，卻又愛用（例如 in line with ） 今天，要不是家人拿我當英文家教，我恐怕會繼續這個錯誤： 以為 please kindly ... 是比較客氣的說法

首先，證所稅 不等於 證交稅 --- 後者是針對交易課稅，比較不痛不癢， 前者是針對證券交易的所得課稅，也就是資本利得稅 「 證交稅 是針對行為課稅，目的是為了增加稅收; 證所稅 是針對結果課稅，目的是為了公平租稅。」 在此不論優劣取捨，只看英文。 因此，證交稅是 securities transaction tax 證所稅則是 capital gain(s) tax 美國國稅局網站 Ten Important Facts About Capital Gains and Losses capital gains tax (複數) 一般比較常見。 capital gain tax (單數) 也有其支持者，例如IRS的表格(見下方e.g.)就是。 原則上，兩種皆可。

還是有點不懂。 平均餘命是 life expectancy，是指各年齡組預期能活到幾歲的平均。 平均壽命是life expectancy at birth，是指0歲嬰兒這一年齡組預期能活到幾歲的平均。 所以...我們平常愛說的「女人通常可活的比男人久」，意思是「平均壽命」而非平均餘命？
