[習語] 鹿茸的兩難？？on the "antlers" of a dilemma

繼 bumbler 之後，經濟學人雜誌再度教導大家，「鹿茸」這個不久前橫掃台灣媒體的buzzword，原來英文叫做 antler

愛玩文字遊戲（尤其是標題）的經濟學人，
下了這標題 on the antlers of a dilemma ，自然也是有典故的





背景：
經濟學人(The Economist)上週末出刊，不但報導了台灣最近的太陽花運動，還「順便」報導了台灣的政治局勢。

後者標題，On the antlers of a dilemma

出自習語 on the horns of a dilemma
只是從 牛角 (horn) 換為 鹿角 (antler)

既然是 dilemma，兩難不知該選擇哪一個，所以，這個 "角" 也會有兩個囉（所以是複數的 horns與antlers）

先來看原本的習語 on the horns of a dilemma
中文詞義：進退維谷、進退兩難、左右為難


懶人上網查：

劍橋字典：to be unable to decide which of two things to do because either could have bad results

柯林斯字典：

1. faced with the choice between two equally unpalatable alternatives
2. in an awkward situation

Wikipedia：
One in this position has been traditionally described as "being on the horns of a dilemma", neither horn being comfortable. This is sometimes more colorfully described as "Finding oneself impaled upon the horns of a dilemma", referring to the sharp points of a bull's horns, equally uncomfortable (and dangerous).

• 牛角(horn)在此用來比喻

1. 有兩個選擇的難題，選哪個都不是，選了哪個都會如同被牛角刺穿一樣痛
2. 兩個選擇本身的犀利、可怕、尖銳等等

要注意的是，這個習語中的兩個選擇，通常是指 不好的，
也就是兩個都不好 （請看上面字義的劃底線部份）

所以如果造了個句子說：
John is on the horns of a dilemma - he doesn't know whom to take to the party, Mary or Lisa. 
這樣就隱含了 "Mary 或 Lisa 都不好"  的意思。

（但如果多加點劇情，或許就可以：
John doesn't know whom to take to the party, Mary or Lisa -- 
Mary's sister threatened to spam his email box if he doesn't take her sister. 
Lisa's bosom friends said they'll make his days miserable if he doesn't ask her. 
John is really on the horns of a dilemma. ）

此外，大部分人會認為這個習語為何用horn 是因為：

1. 從馴牛、鬥牛聯想而來

2. 從惡魔的形象聯想而來 （西方的惡魔頭上有兩隻角）

但我也看到沒那麼刺激的說法，例如這個網站說起源只是單純的修辭學

再來看台灣新聞媒體報導時的翻譯（這是指在第一時間搶著報導時，或許後來若有人仔細中譯，會有其他更好的譯法）

最常見的是譯為「鹿茸中的困境」

個人意見：這應該是為了突顯新聞議題「鹿茸」而採取的譯法，但「困境」二字顯得累贅


我比較喜歡的譯文是「卡在鹿茸上」（而且還用上了媒體及網民近來戲謔用詞「馬卡茸」中的後兩字）


也有人把這標題直接翻成「進退兩難」
但，這樣就看不出來作者苦心玩出的文字遊戲了
畢竟，並沒有 on the antlers of a dilemma這個成語啊！

你或許想問，為什麼沒有？為什麼當初要用horn不用antler？

哎呀，想到牛角會認為有殺傷力嘛，
想到鹿茸...

且不說我們認為鹿茸很補，根本是好東西，

鹿與人的接觸不像牛那麼多，且攻擊性較低，

要是當初有人造個成語說 on the antlers of a dilemma，
這人若不是有過被鹿攻擊的慘痛經驗，
不然就是他的世界裡沒有bull，只有deer，而且還是攻擊性很高的deer，才會自然而然先想到鹿角吧。

就像愛斯基摩人的語彙中對雪著墨甚多，
語言是反映生活的呀
